'The Letterpress in Cinema'

My concept for this document was to cover where the letterpress machine was featured in films. Highlighting the importance of traditional craft in mainstream media. The purpose of the booklet was to give an overview and briefly inform.

This inspiration came from the movie ‘Little Women’ made in 2019. Where there is a scene dedicated to the whole process of publishing a book. Showing the letterpress in action. So I decided to take the aesthetic of the classic 1868 book which is old-style, vintage and charismatic. With clear indented texture, and highly detailed design.

First experiments of using the letterpress. Needing to perfect the alignment on the composing stick & making sure I spell all words backwards!

I just love the ornaments used for these gorgeous details and the very earthy colour palettes. Where is it clear that it the whole design conveys a lot of character, and high-value craft. I wanted to depict this same tone in my document. Highlighting the connection between the past eras of design and how it still infiltrates today’s modern practices.

I really enjoyed designing a publication, really felt like putting a puzzle together! I again used my printed ornaments to use throughout for little details to frame the pages.
